The Word of God. The Divine Logos

Updated: Mar 15

John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John opens his gospel with a critical insight into the origin of all things, in the beginning was the word, and the word was god

This phrase, the word, comes to us to describe God

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us

The word, also comes to us to describe Jesus, the word made flesh

Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Jesus is the Word of God

When we look in the Bible, we find that "The Word" is capitalized, This is not something that should be overlooked, it is not just any word, but a profound concept. In the original translations of the Bible, in ancient Greek, this word is Logos, the divine Logos.

To the Greeks, Logos was the principle of order, reason, and meaning that underpinned the universe. Around 500 BC, Heraclitus of Ephesus referred to it as the eternal force of change and harmony, a rational structure holding together a world of flux. An unseen intelligence that formed chaos into cosmos.

Later the Stoics built on this idea. To them, Logos was the animating spark of the divine, the rational soul permeating nature and humanity alike. It was both transcendent and immanent, beyond our world yet also within it, guiding life toward purpose and virtue.

This context is vital. Jesus as the Logos is the embodiment of divine reason, the order of creation, the harmony of existence. Jesus is more than a prophet and messenger, he is the living expression of God’s mind. Where the Greeks sought the Logos through philosophy, John declares it has walked among us, and we are called to join him.

John 14:23 - “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.”

What we find is that our faith is not only a path to spiritual enlightenment but also a journey towards embodying the divine Logos, the source of all wisdom and life.
