St. John, purification & the soul

Updated: Mar 15

When all feels lost and times are dark, when the future seems unclear and ridden with shadows, do not fear, we may just be in a process of purification, this is a stage of spiritual transformation that St. John of the Cross called “The Dark night of the Soul”

St. John of the Cross was a 16th-century Spanish mystic and poet wrote. In his writings he describes the spiritual journey as one that includes a profound period of darkness, where the soul feels abandoned by God as we are stripped of our former attachments, ego, and false comforts. This darkness is not a punishment but a necessary stage of purification. The darkness is the emptying of the cup, the spiritual womb from which our rebirth shall flourish like a lotus flower emerging from the murky depths of the swamp.

The Dark Night is about the soul’s transition from reliance on the senses and material things to a deeper, purer union with God.

During this time, the soul is stripped of all attachments which leads to spiritual maturity. It’s a journey of faith, where one learns to trust in God’s presence even in apparent absence.

Through this purification, we emerge with a more profound faith and intimacy with God, stronger and more aligned with His will. The darkness is temporary, but its purpose is to bring forth the soul’s most radiant spiritual maturity.

Do not look here or there for the kingdom of God

The kingdom of God is within you.

Find it dwelling within yourself and your entire world will change for the better.
